Shopping by Neighborhood: Arlington, Virginia

As a personal shopper, one of the most common questions I receive is, "where are your favorite places to shop?" My fav shopping spots are local boutiques, both at home and when I travel, because you can often find more unique pieces than at the chain stores. So, I though I would share some of my favorite local boutiques, starting with my own neighborhood, Arlington, Virginia. I'll continue to share my favorite shops by neighborhood throughout the year.

South Moon Under. While technically a chain (they have about 15 locations, mostly in the DC area, Delaware, Pennsylvania), the Clarendon location is right up the road from me and my go to boutique within walking distance. They always have a good selection of trendy pieces to work into my wardrobe as well as a good selection of skinny pants (my personal favorite) and jeans.

ShoeFly. Though a shoe store, I generally pop in here for the jewelry. They always have very unique pieces from local and independent designers that I've never seen anywhere else.

Current Boutique. My neighborhood consignment store, this is where I consign my clothes after a closet edit and I often end up walking out with a new piece after dropping off the old pieces.

Periwinkle. The Shirlington location (there's also one in Old Town Alexandria and National Harbor) is my go to for fun and inexpensive jewelry. I always get compliments on the pieces I buy here. Also a good resource for dresses, both dressy and casual, and my favorite t-shirt brand, Lilla P.

Gossip on 23rd. The recently expanded boutique only carries pieces that are under $100. A great place for an inexpensive pick me up dress or top. I always find fun accessories here too.

Covet. This hidden gem is a great place to browse unique jewelry and gifts. There's also a thrift/antique store in the same building that's fun to pop into while you're over there.

7. Other People's Love Letters: 150 Letters You Were Never Meant to See by Bill Shapiro. You'll find at least one love letter in this book that you can relate to and enjoy the voyeuristic aspect as you read.

8. Armani Exchange Men's Watch. Don't be afraid to give a Valentine's themed gift to your man too. He'll love this red watch and think of you every time he wears it.

9. Mary Kay Brush Collection. What gal doesn't love a good set of make up brushes?

New Year Cleaning

Forget spring cleaning, the beginning of a new year is a great time to get organized. I'm sure you've added more stuff to your closet over the holidays and with the cold and quiet days of January looming before you, it's a good time to spend an afternoon cleaning out your closet. Here are some tips to get you started:

1. EDIT

If you don't like wearing something, get rid of it. If you don't feel good in an item, you're not going to wear it, so just get rid of it. This includes tops that you're always tugging at, colors that don't make you feel good, pants that always bug you because they're a tiny bit too short or too low or too tight. There's a reason why you don't wear certain things, even if you don't know what it is, so just toss it. This includes things that you spent a lot of money on, it doesn't matter how much you spent on it if it's not working for you. Go with your gut. I find that most of my clients already have the right instincts, but have a hard time purging on their own.

If something doesn't fit you, get it out of your closet. For the most part, if something doesn't fit you, get rid of it. If you know you're going to be gaining or losing weight in the next three to six months, it might be OK to hang on to a few items that you really love and that would be hard to replace. If this is the case though, you still need to get these items out of your closet - put them in a box under the bed or in a guest room closet. You should only have items in your closet that you can put on tomorrow.

If an item is worn out or damaged, toss it or fix it. If an item is just worn out, it has to go, no matter how much you love it. If it's something that can be repaired, pull it out of your closet and don't put it back in until it's wearable.

2. ORGANIZE

Group like with like. Now that you've purged everything you don't love and wear, it's time to get organized. Start by grouping like items with like - put all your pants together, all short sleeve tops together, all skirts, etc. Within each category, organize by color from light to dark. The more you can store on hangers, the better. It's much easier to see what you have when it's hanging than when it's in drawers. Use non-slip Huggable Hangers for sweaters to avoid pulling.

Don't compartmentalize. You'll get more wear out of your wardrobe if you avoid compartmentalizing items - for example, separating work shirts and weekend shirts. Most likely, 80% of your shirts could be worn either to work or on the weekend depending on what you pair it with. Also, don't limit yourself by separating spring and fall clothes because most can transition throughout the year. With your clothes doing double duty, you'll find you have increased your wardrobe without buying a thing.

Organize accessories. If you can't see something, you're never going to wear it. Display accessories so that you can see what you have. Store jewelry in stackable trays or hang necklaces on hooks on the wall. Line up shoes on shelves or shoe racks (not in boxes) so you can easily see all of your options.

3. DONATE/CONSIGN/TRASH

Donate. Donate most of what you get rid of. Goodwill and Salvation Army are great places to donate your clothes for a good cause.

Consign. Consign pieces that are still in good condition, up-to-date and no more than three to five years old. This is a good option for those quality pieces that just don't fit you anymore. Keep in mind that most consignment stores are picky and will not take everything you have. You won't usually get a fortune for your clothes but you might get a little and you can put it toward updating your closet.

Toss. Trash anything that is in bad condition, has holes, etc. Or lingerie items that can't be donated. Just, literally, put them in the trash bin.

4. ENJOY!

Now that your closet only contains pieces that you love, wear and that fit and flatter you, you're going to love getting dressed in the morning. And you'll have more fun accessorizing now that you can see everything you have. Enjoy!

Playing Dress Up for the New Year

Whether you're staying in with your husband, having a dinner party with friends or hitting up the hottest gala in the city, you should always ring in the new year with some added style to set the tone for the year to come.

Casual New Year. If you're planning a casual evening, try pairing some brightly colored pants with a sparkly top. You'll be comfy yet festive.

Shopping for Winter Coats

I recently talked about how I like to add at least one new pair of boots to my shoe wardrobe each season and I feel the same way about coats. During the winter months, I spend so much time in coats that I like to have options so I don't feel like I'm wearing the same thing every day. But contrary to how I feel about boots, I don't necessarily love coats. They often feel kind of boxy or boring and they hide my outfit! So, I'm always on the look out for interesting, colorful and fun coats. Here are a few of my favorite styles this winter.

Fabulous Halloween!

Still looking for a last minute costume idea for this weekend? Try emulating one of your favorite fashion icons! It's hard to be stylish while dressed in a goofy costume, these ideas will keep you looking fashionable and still be appropriate for the costume party. Bonus: you may have many of these items already in your closet!

Costume Idea 1: Anna Wintour. This Vogue editor who inspired the boss in The Devil Wears Prada can always be seen in her large sunnies, fur and fabulous heels. You'll really pull the look off if you can find a blond bob wig to mimic her iconic hair style.

Look like Ann Wintour by throwing a fur jacket over your shoulders and wrap dress and adding fabulous heels, large sunglasses and a blond bob wig.

Costume Idea 2: Rachel Zoe. This stylist also loves fur and large sunglasses as well as sky high heels, wide leg pants and Starbucks. She also has a signature hair style in her wavy blonde locks.

One of Rachel's favorites is the fur vest. Layer it over a silk blouse, wide leg jeans, and the tallest heels you can find. Carry around an empty Starbucks cup and say things like "That is bananas!" and "I die" and no one will wonder who you are.

Handbag Envy

Fall Must-Haves

I set out to make a list of the top ten must-haves for fall but couldn't narrow it down so, it's a top eleven list. You, however, should narrow it down. Don't feel the need to go out and buy everything on this list, just pick 2-4 items that really speak to you to add a little freshness to your fall wardrobe.

Long pleated skirt: so feminine and ethereal; just remember to keep the pleats small and delicate not school girl-y
Navajo inspired prints: we often see tribal prints on trend but this season we're seeing some unique Navajo and western inspired ones
Cape: such a fun layering option
Colored jeans: these usually look best in a skinny version
Striped sweater: such a great weekend option paired with jeans
Color-blocked handbag: a unique option, choose a classic shape with two or more tones
Wedge ankle boot: great with a pair of wide leg jeans
Fur trimmed coat: or you can go with a fur trimmed cardigan
Stacked heel boot: all the height with none of the hurt, stacked heels are much more comfy than stilettos
Chunky knit sweater: so cozy!
Slim, cropped pant : pair with flats a la Audrey Hepburn or roll up the bottom and pair with a stacked heel

Shopping for Missoni at Target

That's right, you read that correctly: Missoni has created a line for Target! This is probably one of the biggest designer collaborations Target has ever done. The 400 piece collection will hit stores (and online) on September 13 and I have a feeling these things are going to go fast. Here are some of my favorites:

The swimsuit is adorable, the maxi and long cardigan, while a little matchy-matchy together would be great individual pieces and I would wear that cape/cardigan with an all black outfit or jeans all winter.

If you're intimidated by Missoni's sometimes loud prints, take a baby step with some accessories. Prediction: those flats will be one of the first things to sell out and the printed bobby pins are to die for!

There are even pieces for men and kids. I'm loving these ties. And this jacket and rain boots are so adorable for a little girl.

I'm actually most excited about some of the pieces for the home. I would buy everything pictured above.

And how can you resist this bicycle?! I rarely ride a bike and this one might motivate even me to hop on two wheels more often.

Embrace Your Personal Style

I recently started reading the book Everyday Icon: Michelle Obama and the Power of Style by Kate Betts and I am really touched by her message. She uses Michelle as an example but the book is mainly about the power of personal style and she's managed to articulate the way I feel about style better than I think I ever have. The opening paragraph of her book is as follows:

"In many cultures - French, Italian, Russian, and Japanese, to name a few - why style matters is self-evident and arguing in defense of it is like arguing on behalf of music or art or even clean water and fresh air. But Americans are ambivalent about style. We are by turns attracted to and afraid of style, fascinated and suspicious. We confuse it with transient fashion trends and logo-splashed clothes. Too often American women subvert their sense of style and don a uniform instead. They play it safe so as not to detract from their intellecual contributions. Style is frivolous; style is for airheads. Tenacious conventions pit style against substance and suggest we have to choose one or the other as a defining focus or sensibility: you can work for shoes and bags or you can work for world peace. But not both."

I sometimes worry that other people think what I do is superficial or frivolous and I have to stop and remind myself that I don't think it's silly. I think style can be so powerful. There is a quote that I believe is from Chanel and I cannot find it at the moment but it says something to the effect of, your clothes do not change who you are but they can change how you feel and that, in turn, can change who you are. Feeling good in what you wear and how you look can give you confidence, which can change your life. Once you've changed your life and are happy in it, you can move on to changing and improving the world around you. You can have fabulous shoes and bags and world peace. Plus, it's just nice to be surrounded by beauty. It's part of human nature to be attracted to things that are visually appealing and we all tend to be happier and more relaxed when we're surrounded by things that comfort us and that we find attractive. So, don't worry that the people at the office won't take you seriously or that your intelligent friends will think you're silly for dressing with style. In fact, the confidence you gain by doing so will make people stop, think again and take you seriously for you who are and what you have to contribute.

I Can Relate: A Personal Shopper's Tale of Shopping Frustration

My fiance and I have been working on our wedding registry lately and after several slightly overwhelming trips to Crate and Barrell, Bed, Bath and Beyond and Bloomingdale's, I had an epiphany: I finally truly understand how my clients must feel when they're shopping for clothes because I feel the same way trying to shop for housewares. I don't really enjoy it as much as shopping for clothes, I don't really get excited about water glasses or toasters, I don't feel like I have all the information I need to shop efficiently and successfully so I end up spending a lot of time trying to figure it out and I don't really have as good a sense of style for my home because there's definitely a different approach to things you use everyday than items you can change multiple times a day if you feel like it. But, at the same time, it's important to me to have things that work well for my home and add a sense of style to my life. I could really use someone to just come in and tell me: what is the best cookware brand for the best price? Where is the best place to shop for china? What kitchen appliances do I really need? What is my personal home style?

This made me think about what I do for my clients. When my clients first come to me, they generally don't like to shop that much, they don't have the information they need to shop efficiently and successfully, and they don't have a good sense of their personal style or what works well for their bodies and lifestyle. I help my clients figure out where to splurge and where to save, what are the best brands for the best price, where is the best place to shop for jeans, which items of clothing and accessories they really need and what is their personal style? I walk them through the process so they don't have to spend time figuring it out on their own.

I know it would save me a ton of time and money if I had a personal shopper to help walk me through this process of shopping for my home. This is a whole new shopping experience for me.

The Search for the In Between: Walkable Wedges

I'm always looking for those 'in between' pieces for my wardrobe: things that are not too dressy but not too casual, stylish but comfortable too, things that can go from day to night, be worn to work and on the weekend. These are the things that my clients have the hardest time with. They're always telling me they need more versatile pieces and the key to versatility in your wardrobe is to go for the in between; look for pieces that are not too work but not too weekend, not too day but not too evening, not too trendy but not unstylish. One of the categories I have the hardest time with is shoes, I find everything to be either a fabulous (and uncomfortable) high heel or a too casual flat. When I'm working with my clients, getting down and dirty in their closets or walking around the shops for six hours, it's not practical to wear a three inch heel but I also don't want to be in flip flops. So, join me on my search for some walkable wedges to get me through the rest of the season and into the beginning of fall. The ideal walkable wedge will give me at least a little bit of height without being too tall and will take me from a client appointment to dinner with friends to a weekend outing - AND they'll be in a neutral color so they'll match everything I own. Is that too much to ask for?

Take Me Away...How to Travel Stylishly

Whether it's by plane, train, ship, or car, a woman of worldly travels needs to know how to pack for her getaway. Packing in itself sometimes is so overwhelming, especially when the weather conditions of your destination may not match the current ones of where you are living. Always check the forecast before you throw anything in your suitcase to be sure you are packing only what you need. And of course, you want to look your best when you are out and about on vacation. Therefore, you can follow these helpful hints to keep yourself stylish and stress-free to make the most of your cruise trip to the Bahamas, flight to Europe, Amtrak ride to the mountains, or wherever your adventures may take you:

1. Pack a lot in a little amount of space. Folding your clothes make them not only bulkier in your suitcase, but lead to unsightly wrinkles once you unpack. To avoid both problems, flatten your clothes one on top of another so that they are smoothed out. You will be surprised also how much more you can fit in that same suitcase you thought was going to be too small!

2. Think ahead. If you know of certain events on your itinerary, have an idea in mind of the outfit to wear. Dinner? Wear that little black dress that will work at any fine dining restaurant. Beach? Pick one or 2 of your favorite bathing suits and a day dress and sarong that can be used as a cover up. Sightseeing? A comfortable pair of jeans or shorts (weather varying) and a top made of a breatheable fabric (cotton preferably). Always pack a versatile pair of heels for dressier occasions and comfortable walking shoes for more casual days.

3. Dress comfortably, but look good. For the day when you are going to be cooped up in a seat for however many hours it takes to get to where your going, you might just want to take the easy option and wear sweats and sneakers. Now while there is nothing wrong with that, a pair of leggings and a looser fitting shirt and cardigan or tunic top are so much more put together and not so "I just rolled out of bed." It may also be good to dress in layers for purposes of air conditioning or heat in the vehicle as well as when you arrive you may need to throw something on or take a layer off.

4. Make matching outfits easy. Everyone wants to bring options so that they can pick and choose what they want when they get there (that is, after you have narrowed it down a little with Tip # 2) Stick to a color pallet that is easy to mix and match. Colors like black, khaki, and white, and denim are your go-to basics and separates can be in other colors and prints to liven up your look.

5. Accessorize after you arrive. Leave your old jewelery that your tired with anyway at home. Not only do you get to re-accessorize your wardrobe to rejuvenate it, but you give yourself another excuse to go shopping for some local finds which you can bring back with you as souvenirs! (If you must bring a few basic jewels in case you have some attachment in which you can't live without them, then by all means do so).

6. Find the most flattering swimsuit. Don't underestimate the power of good swimwear. The right suit will give you enough confidence to strut down the beach looking your best, no matter your body shape. Settling for second best is unacceptable. Shoo around until you find the right one for you.

7. Mountain Gear can be sexy too. While the down parka and ski boots may not be the most slimming of accessories, there is a way to look cute while you're outdoors in cold weather.
Lace up some tall boots over legwarmers and leggings and pair a long t-shirt with a sweater or hoodie for a cute, casual and weather appropriate look. Stay warm with some stylish scarves and beanies to mix and match.

8. Dress like yourself. Vacations may seem like the ideal time to experiment with a new look considering the public there won't know the difference, but don't diverge too far away from your individual taste. Not only will you feel like you are playing a character, but with the new clothes you buy, you may not feel comfortable wearing them when you do come back to the everyday you.

The most beautiful and popular stars were out to shine on the red carpet and everyone was on the edge of their seats to find out who was going to be a big winner. Sure enough, there were some surpirises and some very lucky nominees. But the most exciting part for me was to see what everyone was wearing. You've heard me talk about blue being the color for spring this year and it was definitely well represented on the red carpet. The versatile beauties that these are, most can be paired with jeans for a chic day outfit or glammed up with a cocktail dress to be flirty and fun. Most styles come in solids, patent leather, metallic, or textured with shine to fit any lifestyle. So to buying a Jimmy Choo shoe from this collection would be like buying a great basic that can be paired with many outfits to rejuvenate your wardrobe and make everything you have in your closet feel like new. Here below I have listed all the styles and my suggestions as to what to pair them with for the ultimate way to show off your Choo shoes...take a look!

CLUE

This is your most basic, anytime kind of shoe. Dresses (bare legged), skinny/ boot cut jeans, leggings all go with this. It would be the clothes that would dictate if it were for daywear or eveningwear...the choice is yours with this peeptoe slingback!

FINLAY
Flats like these are mostly casual, daywear. Comfortable for running around in on busy days you can pair these with any cut of a jean or leggings and a dress/skirt. Tights will go with these too for another option to keep those legs conservative and cute under a skirt or dress.

GLENYS

The best celebutante shoe out there: the cage heels. For eveningwear mostly, this would look best with a short cocktail dress (tighter if you are younger) for a night out on the town. Can also be paired with skinny jeans or leggings for a less dressy look but the ultimate go-to shoe when you want attention all on you!

LACE
I can see this best with professional business wear, like a pencil skirt and blazer or a office worthy dress. If worn, sheer toe-less hose is a must because it would violate the beauty of the shoes to see the tights covering your toes! Alternately, this could be a more conservative look to go with a formal dress. Depending on the style of the dress and the wearer's age, this could be classically beautiful with a floor or knee length gown.

LANCE

Here is the shoe that will make you feel like a Greek goddess. Like the LACE, it can be similarly paired with your best work attire and formal wear. The slimly-wrapped leather straps set this shoe style apart from most other heeled sandals and look elegantly timeless.

LEWIS
Appropriately called the Perfect Pump, this is another everywhere kind of shoe. Wear them to work peeping out from under your slacks or with a dress suit, or wear out to dinner with dark wash jeans and a dressy top. All the more personality comes from the leopard pattern that are featured here. Just don't overdo the animal print if you go for this and pair with solids to bring life to a neutral color ( ex: black, white, tan).
PRIVATE
Almost looks like a ankle bootie with cutouts, this shoe is edgy and requires a trend-setter mentality to pull off. This also does not allow the wearer to wear tights since you can't really hide much with them. Wear these only with leg conforming bottoms like leggings or skinny jeans and bare legged under skirts and dresses.

QUIET
The name of these is pretty much the exact opposite of what I think when I look at them. These are loud and proud, the tallest and boldest in the collection. These can be combined with jeans of all cuts (just make sure they are long enough to cover at least 3/4 of the heel) and if you're daring enough, all skirts and dresses too. The shorter the skirt, the sexier, but use your own discretion because you want to look sexy but in a classy way.

LOCKETT
The most coservative of all, this pointy mid-heel shoe is best for the corporate woman with businesswear like the LEWIS. I would also reccommend it for taller women who feel like they don't want to tower over others but still want a dressier shoe. Being closed up all around, anything goes when pairing these with your wardrobe for a chic and put-together look.

This year there has been more of a play with colors. The color selection has expanded past the traditional black or khaki which is beginning to become a bit cliche. Instead be unconventional and go for white, blue, green, red, pink or various patterned ones. Good places to hunt are Express, GUESS, or Banana Republic. This should be any and every woman's go-to outerwear on the days you need something to go over anything from everyday jeans and a t-shirt to cocktail dresses for evening. Your jewelry collection is an essential part of your wardrobe that should be ready to accessorize any outfit. Of course, most of us have much more jewelry that we’ve collected, but with the following essentials, you’ll not only be ready for anything, but will look and feel fabulous while you’re doing it.

Bangles: Sometimes a gal needs to announce her arrival and what better way to do that than the clinking of bangles? Go with a uniform pile of thin silver or gold, or mix and match to create a group in different thicknesses and colors.

Brooches: From Jackie O to Michelle O and Madeleine Albright to your grandmother, it’s a chic classic. Keep one on the collar of your favorite wool coat or add one to a blazer or jacket to jazz up a work outfit. To make the look modern, group several together.

Charm Bracelet: From the one you created as a little girl to a gorgeous version from Tiffany, nothing is more meaningful. It’s a stand-out piece that’s a conversation starter.

Chandelier Earrings: They add glamor to any outfit. Perfect for a party or date night, wear them during the day for unexpected drama.

Cocktail Ring: A bold ring is great for taking an outfit from day to night, or making an outfit instantly party-ready; although you can wear yours to breakfast just because you’re that fabulous.

Cuff Bracelet: It’s is a great statement piece when your neckline is too busy for a necklace. Choose one that suits you, from sleek and simple to colorful and ornate.

Diamond Studs: They are your on-call choice for days when you just need a little bling. They go with everything so wear then with any outfit and don’t worry about coordinating. Diamonds don’t have to be real; go with a big over-the-top pair of costume earrings or more subtle ones that you can easily pull off as the real deal.

Hoop earrings: Hoops wane and gain popularity at times but are always in style. A basic pair in gold or silver, the thinner the better, will get you through many an outfit and event.

Pearls: A classic necklace that every woman should own. Try wearing your pearls in unexpected ways, such as with a basic tee and jeans or a funky dress.

Statement Necklace: This is the piece that literally makes an outfit. Throw on a basic black tee and jeans, and by adding a statement necklace, create an outfit that stands out in the crowd.

Watch: The most functional of all your jewelry, choose one that doesn’t look that way: form over function in this case. From $10 to $10,000, there is a watch in everyone’s price range and style. Find the size and shape that works best for you.

Signature Jewelry: Finally, every woman should have at least one piece of signature jewelry that she is known for wearing, and more importantly, has meaning for her. Whether it’s your grandmother’s necklace, the ring you picked up on a trip, or the gift you got on your sixteenth birthday, use this as a means to tell the story of who you are and what’s important to you.

Destination Shopping: Greenville, SC

I love shopping around in the cities I visit. I always end up discovering a new store, line or one of a kind item that I can't find at home. I spent Thanksgiving in Greenville, SC, which totally surprised me with an adorable downtown area with great shopping. At a store called Monkees, I noticed a new (to me) line that called Karlie. Monkees is a cute boutique, with chains across the south (it looks like a franchise if you're interested in opening your own boutique :). The boutique itself was stylish with great brands but overall, it was pretty typical with pieces and brands I see in many other stores. But I was drawn to the pieces by Karlie because they fit in perfectly on the rack with Tory Burch, Elie Tahari, Milly, Shoshanna, etc. but seemed to be about a third of the price. The $90 Karlie dress caught my attention more than the $400 dress hanging next to it. Naturally, I did a little research on the line when I got home and learned that it's based out of Dallas, Texas, which made me love it even more, being a Texas gal and all. You can't buy the line directly from the website, but I found a few online stores that sell some pieces. I'm still trying to find out if it's sold anywhere in the DC area. Here are some of my favorite pieces that I found browsing around online. All of these pieces came from Geneaology, Luna and Monkees. Enjoy!

Shoe Basics

Hello everyone! Please forgive my blogging absence. I've just been busy and didn't realize how long it had been since I posted something. I need another intern!

So, when Nordstrom's sale started last week, of course I had to take a look at the shoes. I'm always in need of new shoes because I don't get quite as excited about shoes as I do about clothes and jewelry for some reason so I never have enough shoes. And then when I do buys shoes, I always want them in bold colors with bows and rhinestones, etc. and then I find myself without a basic black heel or neutral flat when I need it (I do the same thing with clothes too actually). So, I've vowed not to buy another bold shoe until I conquer a couple of basics. One thing I need is a black heel for winter that I can wear with hose. I have a pair of black patent pumps but when I wear them with hosiery, they slip off my feet so I've been looking for a pair with a strap. I love this Steven by Steve Madden pair that's on sale for $98.90.

I also love sandals and boots more than little flats so I'm lacking in footwear when the weather is in between. This pair by Cole Haan would go with anything and looks super comfy too. I'm a big fan of Cole Haan shoes, you usually get both style and comfort, which can be a rare find. And these are on sale for only $99.90.

I'm a size 5.5 if anyone wants to buy me a Christmas present. :)

The jeans aren't cropped, I rolled them up. When trying this at home, keep the rolls somewhat casual and imperfect and small rather than big folds so it cuts right around your ankle, which will make your legs look skinnier.

I've been craving a statement watch for fall and, while they might be out of my price range, I can't help but ogle these gorgeous Michele Watches.

Apparently, I'm especially attracted to these white ones that would totally glam up jeans and a sweater in the fall.

And how can you not love this colorful snake skin band? Pair it with a simple face and you've got such a fun watch.

This zebra print one caught my eye as well. There's also a leopard print one. Very on trend for fall!

It's that time of year again. Spring 2010 collections are walking down the runways as we speak. For those of us in the real world (as opposed to the fashion world), it's difficult to think spring when it's just starting to feel like fall. But, don't worry, that's what I'm here for. I'll tell you what's hot next spring when the time comes to actually do the shopping. If anyone's interested in browsing the collections, Style.com is my favorite resource for what I've missed at fashion week. And if you're doing a closet edit as you're putting away summer things, be sure to keep belts, shorts, florals and maxi dresses because they'll be back again next year. On Friday September 25th, six local eco and ethical friendly designers will come together to celebrate the 5th annual Fashion Fights Poverty at the Renaissance Mayflower Hotel in Washington D.C. Each of the six designers will showcase new and unique designs to raise awareness about how to dress responsibly. Tickets are $150 for general seats or $75 for standing. T-shirts are $25. The three objectives of Fashion Fights Poverty is to Rethink, Reuse and ReAct! Join the cause while helping to create awareness.

The 6 local designers are:

Mirza Mperial--The influence of art, architecture and culture are seen in this designer's women wear.

Aidah Collection--This hand made women's wear collection uses natural materials, honest factories, and donates a part of the proceeds to non-profit organizations.

Nudie Jeans Co--Jeans, tees and underwear are all made from 100% organic cotton.

ReneeQ Bespoke--Creates stylish t-shirts from materials that are organic and biodegradable. The fabrics that are left over are sewn together to create other outfits in order to recycle.

Yesterday, this outfit took me from a networking meeting, working all day and to a concert at the Birchmere at night. Gotta love a versatile outfit! If you live in the DC area and haven't been to Gossip, I highly recommend it. I got both the dress and the ring there over the weekend. The dress was $38 and the ring was $12. Everything in her store is under $100 and I always find unique pieces there. I love that the dress has kind of a vintage feel and I'm totally obsessed with the ring for some reason. It makes me happy to look down and see it on my finger.

"How To Have Style" by Isaac Mizrahi

This book came out last year from the famous fashion designer. I

t has 400 pages with full color that addresses issues such as shopping on a budget, stop wearing jeans, dressing for a black tie event, how to wear color, and skirt lengths. Sold for about $30

"The Style Strategy" by Nina Garcia

From the Project Runway judge and Marie Claire fashion director, gives advise about being budget conscious. She gives a list of celebrity bargain fashion musts. The reader will also learn how to maximize the wardrobe they already own. For about $22. She is also the author of "The One Hundred" and "The Little Black Book of Style."

"The Gospel According to Coco Chanel"

Set to release September 1, this books talks about the life of the french fashion designer icon, along with style tips. The 225 page book explores Coco's ideas on fashion and life. For about $20. A major motion picture about Coco, entitled "Coco before Chanel" will be released this fall.

I've mentioned Ann Taylor's new design team and how I'm more into them this season than usual. I popped into Ann Taylor Loft today and saw a couple of super cute pieces for reasonable prices! The jeans are only $59.50 and the dress is $79.50.

These pale ballerina pink skinny jeans are so sweet. They looked slightly pinker and slightly cuter in the store (I think these are the same ones).

And this shirt dress is adorable. I would take the matching belt off and add a different belt to jazz it up. It would be so easy to through on with a pair of flats.

Last Minute Summer Style Update

This time of year, it doesn't make a lot of sense to invest in summer styles since it will be fall before we know it. But sometimes you just need a little update to jazz things up. The solution: a colorful, summery hair accessory. This post is inspired by my sister who was having trouble finding a headband/hair accessory whose bows and flowers didn't make her look and feel like a little girl.

For a more sophisticated look, take some inspiration from Mischa Barton's bold feather. This green and blue one from Urban Outfitters is more subtle but still packs a punch.

I've been into wearing flowers in my hair all summer but I can't do the ones attached to headbands because the flower sticking out right at the front of my head makes me feel silly. I like clips and bobby pins like these, from Forever21 that you can wear further back on the side of your head or near your ponytail. F21 has tons more options to sort through. H&M and Target are also good resources for trendy and cheap hair accessories. Let me know what you find!

Loving these new arrivals from Martin+Osa. I'm definitely a summer person but I can't help but get a little excited about fall fashion when I see fabulous outerwear like this. The trench is cuter in gray but I was having trouble saving the picture. And prices aren't anything to jump at but are pretty reasonable for outerwear. $170 for the trench and $140 for the safari jacket. If you wait a couple of months, you may even be able to get them on sale.

Shopping in West Hartford

A couple of weekends ago, I visited my sister and her family in West Hartford, CT and, of course, we did some shopping. The sweet boys (bf, brother-in-law and nephew) actually patiently shopped with me while my sister was working. :) If you're ever in West Hartford, here are my top picks. We mainly shopped around the Town Center and I have one essential stop-off a little outside of the city, worth the 20 minute drive.

Town Center:

1. Homeward Bound: This was probably my favorite store in the area. They have a few racks of clothes and an adorable kid section but the best part of this spot is the furniture. I loved it! It was all very unique with somewhat of a vintage feel. Great chairs, couches, desks and an adorable little vanity that I'm still dreaming about - it would make my mornings just a little more fabulous. The store even offers home design services.

2. National Jean Company: You'll also find locations of this chain in Bethesda and Reston for those of you in the DC area. They remind me a little bit of Cusp with a great selection of the denim brands you're used to seeing, familiar brands such as Ella Moss and Juicy, and then little surprises every once in a while. When I was there in Hartford, I discovered a new-to-me line called Nieves Lavi that I kept gravitating toward.

3. Kimberly Boutique: This is a tiny boutique but worth stopping into. They carry a range of prices and brands from BCBG to Tulle. I even saw a dress by Paramita, a very unique Spanish brand I haven't seen in years, although I'm starting to think I imagined it because I can't find anything about the brand online now.

4. Ten Thousand Villages: When I just looked up this store, I discovered it has tons of locations, including Austin, TX and Alexandria, VA. Who knew? I'd never heard of it before. They carry all kinds of great handmade gifts and home decor pieces representing cultures of artisans in Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America. And to make it even better, they are one of the largest fair trade organizations in the world. If you shop online, you can see pictures and bios of the artisans who make the goods from countries like Peru and Haiti.

South Windsor

5. Francesca's Collections: Francesca's has been one of my and my sisters' favorite boutique chains in Texas for years. We love to browse all the jewelry and very reasonably priced clothing. I picked up this adorable navy dress for only $38! But we had no idea it was a national chain. We were thrilled to discover this one near West Hartford. It's located in an outdoor shopping area that is worth the trip with neighbor stores such as Anthropologie.

Washington Life Magazine: Men of Summer

The New Short

I'm finding that a lot of my clients are still in their bermuda shorts (or knee length shorts) this summer. For some women, the longer shorts do work and these shorter styles are not flattering but there are many of you out there who would look great with an update to your shorts wardrobe. I'm not encouraging anyone to wear super tight or super short shorts, in fact, please don't! These shorts are great examples to get you started. The navy silk ones from Martin+Osa are fabulous. I love the print on this yellow pair from J. Crew and these dark denim ones from Banana Republic are a perfect fit.

You want the shorts to be about 3 or 4 inches long. This is referring to the length from the crotch to the end of the short. You could even do about 2 1/2 inches if you're short but don't push it further than that.

Also, make sure that the leg openings are not tight around your leg. You don't want them to be flared out but but keep a little open space for your leg to breath.

The short should be tailored though without being too tight.

Little know fact about me: I love to organize. :) A lot of my clients are already good organizers but those who aren't know this little secret of mine as their closets always somehow end up more organized than when I came in. So, a couple of weeks ago, I bought a new necklace and realized that my necklace storage solution was on the verge of overflowing. (I currently have stacked trays in the lingerie drawers of my dressers, which works very well.) I set out in search of some additional jewelry storage and found this great jewelry tree (literally!) on Etsy.com for only $12.50! It would look great sitting on top of my dresser, not only as extra storage, but as a stylish way to display some beautiful pieces.

New Design Team at Ann Taylor

I've never been an Ann Taylor shopper, personally, but a lot of my clients are so I'm on their email newsletter just to keep up with any sales and discounts that are going on. Yesterday, I received an email that their new collection had arrived. I didn't even open it yesterday and almost deleted it today but decided to take a quick look and was pleasantly surprised by what I saw. The outfit I saw was more appealing to me than Ann Taylor usually is and as I read on I noticed that their July collection was from their "new design team". I was intrigued. It turns out, Ann Taylor has hired a new designer away from Club Monaco, which happens to be one of my fave stores. I caught a glimpse of Ann Taylor's fall collection, which looks even edgier. I don't know if I'm won over yet as far as my own wardrobe is concerned but I'm definitely more excited about shopping there for my clients and look forward to seeing what else they come out with!

Must See Fashion Documentaries By Carrie

"The September Issue" is a documentary about the real Devil Wears Prada, editor in chief for Vogue, Anna Wintour. The movie shows behind the scenes preparations for the 2007 September issue of the magazine, which features designers' looks from Fall Fashion Week. The September issue of Vogue is the largest selling issue and the 2007 issue had 5 pounds of fashion! This documentary is a special look into Anna's otherwise private life. The documentary is set to release August 28, 2009. Check it out!

A recent release with another inside look into the fast paced fashion industry is a documentary about Valentino "The Last Emperor". It shows the career of Italy's richest and most famous man, Valentino Garavani, and his business partner and companion, Giancarlo Giammetti. Click here for scenes from the movie. Summer Jewelry Trends

I've had an obsession with jewelry for as long as I can remember and am feeling inspired by all the colorful summer jewelry trends I'm seeing lately. It's not just about necklaces or bangles this season - choose any type of jewelry you love and follow these style trends:

Nature-inspired: Jewelry adorned with sea shells makes you feel beachy all summer long, even if you have to go to work instead of the pool. Be sure it keep it sophisticated though, not like the shell necklaces you wore at summer camp. Take inspiration from this piece by Anton Heunis. Glamorous flowers are also a chic addition to jewelry this season. How perfect is this purple and yellow one (pictured) for a summer night?

Color is huge in jewelry for summer and my favorite! I love the colorful Tom Binns pearl necklace Michelle Pfeiffer dons on the July cover of InStyle (pictured above). Coral and turquoise have always made a wonderful pair and are prominent this season. Also, look for colorful beads, such as ones made from glass, and stones instead of your basic metal jewelry. Again, keep it sophisticated and glamorous to keep from looking like you're wearing kid jewelry.

Safari and African inspired pieces are so fun right now. Think elephant charms, zebra striped bracelets, wooden bangles, bold African colors. I fell in love with this adorable Juicy Couture elephant pendant (pictured). I have a strange love for safari animals, especially elephants.

Layered necklaces: Make a statement by piling on layers of necklaces. I like wearing four different strands of pearls in different lengths. You can also choose several necklaces in the same metal to group together. You can even cinch the necklaces together with a colorful broach for some added DIY interest.

Gold tones: gold looks great against bronzed summer skin and is perfect paired with this seasons bold colors. It can be more glamorous than silver and is on the fun side of gaudy.

J. Aldridge by Sea of Shoes at Urban Outfitters

One of my favorite bloggers, Jane Aldridge, of Sea of Shoes, has just announced that she helped design a capsule collection of shoes for Urban Outfitters. Those boots are definitely reminiscent of her signature Ann Demeulemeester shoes and I love those little lace up flats. The collection debuts next month. I can't wait to check it out!

They are great for basics with interesting details. The store has the same owners as American Eagle but is more sophisticated. For those in the DC area, the Tysons Corner store is having an event this Thursday from 6-8p. I was thinking about t-shirt necklines this morning. I like a scoop neck because I'm a little bit smaller chested and it enhances my bust a little, looks a little sexy. If you're larger chested, a v-neck works well because it draws the eye inward making your chest appear smaller. Avoid crew necks as a general rule, they're not very flattering.

The wedge is the perfect shoe for my style. I love pieces that are in between, rarely overly dressy or overly casual, pieces that can go from day to night and are appropriate in almost any situation. That is exactly what the wedge is. In between a flat and a heel, you can wear it any time of day, it dresses up a casual outfit and dresses down a fancy one. They are stylish, yet comfortable - my style mantra. I just bought these yellow Bandolino ones on sale at Lord and Taylor. I'm going to wear them to a beach wedding next week - one of those situations where you need to be in between dressy and casual.

I love this dressier pair from Piperlime. The color is unique but would go with anything.

Belted Dresses

I am so obsessed with belting dresses this season! I cannot even wear a dress without putting a belt on it and it's what I want to wear every day! I like medium to wide belts as opposed to skinny ones. And I love anything with color, mixing and matching colors although these gold ones on nude dresses are very classy. So, take all your flowy dresses from last year and belt them; I want everybody to show off their waists this summer.

Wedding Season

It's officially wedding season. With my first summer wedding coming up in a couple of weeks, I've been contemplating what I want to wear this season. I'm craving short, bold colored dresses with defined waistlines and rosette or ruffle detail as a plus. Seems like a lot of specifications but there are actually tons of great dresses that fit my idea out there right now. Here are a few I loved during my quick online search. I love the belt on the fuschia one (I'm very into belted dresses this season!), it would be perfect for an afternoon or more casual wedding. You guys already know I'm obsessed with orange this season, so I love this little number.

This is actually one of my favorites and it's only $72 from the juniors department at Nordstrom! I would wear it with my orange heels. :) Let me know what other great dresses y'all have found and want to wear this summer.

As expected of a recent college graduate, money is an issue. I love fashion and being current on trends is a must for me. Sometimes it can be hard to stay trendy without spending your rent money. My favorite stores that help to keep my wallet full are Zara in Georgetown, H&M in Georgetown and Forever 21 in Fair Oaks Mall.

Zara has great trendy clothing for women, men and kids. The European inspired clothing has something for the whole family for great prices. You can check out the trends offered at the store before you go at www.zara.com

H&M is also a European company that sells clothing for women, men, kids and babies. H&M can be a little cheaper than Zara and have more locations in the US. H&M have famous designers and celebrities help design a line for the company, which has also been a huge success. At www.hm.com you can look at the style guide before you shop.

Forever 21 has a younger target market and a cheaper price point. You can find some great items if you take some time to look. The Fair Oaks store is 2 levels with a men's section also. At www.forever21.com you can buy online and shop buy outfits. If you spend over $75 you get free shipping.

All three of these stores offer a lot of variety and styles sure to please anyone on a budget.

Summer Scarf

At the last seminar I gave, one of the most discussed topics was how do you wear a scarf in the summer? A silk or very light weight scarf is perfect. This spread from Lucky magazine showcases one of my favorite ways to wear a scarf this season. This look works best with a medium or large square scarf - fold it in half into a triangle and tie the ends up behind your neck.

Hi! I'm Carrie, Cathy's new intern. I am a recent graduate of Marymount University in Arlington, VA. I have a bachelor's in Fashion Merchandising. I am 24 years old and a virgo. Stylish Pregnancy

Recently, I've encountered several pregnant women lamenting their style situation. The truth is, it's not easy. It's going to take a little bit of effort to stay stylish during and after your pregnancy but with a little creativity, you can do it. The difficulty is that you are a different size every few weeks for about a year and you already don't feel like yourself because your body is changing so much. If you can find a few stylish pieces to get you through it though, you will feel so much better about yourself. During your pregnancy, you are just going to have to accept that, unless you want to spend a maximum amount of time, energy, and money, your maternity wardrobe is going to be more limited than your regular wardrobe, and that's OK. While, you're pregnant, it's OK to rewear things more often than you normally would. It's also fine if you're not quite as fashionable as you normally are. For example, a great solution to maintain your style is to buy basics (tees, tanks, cardys, jeans, jersey dresses) in solid colors and jazz them up with accessories like scarves and chunky jewelry. Dresses are a great option because they are easier to fit than pants and can grow with you longer. The other lament of the pregnant women is that you don't want to spend a ton of money on something that you're not going to be able to fit into in a few weeks. So, we did a little research and found some websites that carry a lot of pieces under $30.

The first great website we came across is called Sexy Belly Maternity. This dress is perfect for work and is only $39.99!

This top is a fun print for only $29.99. You can layer an unbuttoned non-maternity cardigan over it if you want to cover your shoulders.

Another website with fun, inexpensive pieces is called Kiki's Fashions Maternity. This printed maxi dress is right on trend for only $29.99.
